Newborn Care: Essential Tips for New Parents

Bringing home a newborn is exciting and overwhelming. Understanding basic care needs—feeding, sleeping, bathing, and health monitoring—helps new parents feel confident. Remember that parenting is a learning process, and your pediatrician is your partner in ensuring your baby's health and your peace of mind.

Feeding Your Newborn

Newborns need to eat 8-12 times per day, roughly every 2-3 hours. Breast milk or formula provides complete nutrition for the first 6 months. Watch for hunger cues like rooting, sucking motions, and fussiness. Wet diapers (6+ per day) and steady weight gain indicate adequate intake. Burp after feeding to reduce gas and spit-up. Never prop bottles—always hold your baby during feeds for safety and bonding.

Sleep Safety and Patterns

Newborns sleep 14-17 hours daily in short periods. Always place babies on their backs on firm, flat surfaces free of blankets, pillows, and toys to prevent SIDS. Room-sharing without bed-sharing is safest for the first 6 months. Create a calm sleep environment with dim lights and minimal stimulation. Expect frequent night wakings for feeding—this is normal and necessary for development.

Recognizing Warning Signs

Contact your pediatrician immediately for fever over 100.4°F in infants under 3 months, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, poor feeding, extreme fussiness or lethargy, yellow skin or eyes worsening after the first week, fewer than 6 wet diapers daily, or anything that concerns you. Trust your instincts—new parents often sense when something isn't right. Your pediatrician prefers unnecessary calls over missed serious conditions.
